The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old DeShawn McNiel, a labourer of Hardware Crescent in Newlands.
The other man remains hospitalised.
The police say no motive has yet been established for the gun attack.
The police report that about 3:00 a.m., the men were in an open lot along the main road in Newlands when they were pounced upon by men armed with guns, who opened fire, hitting them repeatedly.
The police were alerted and, upon arrival, found McNiel lying face down in a pool of blood.
