Three motorcyclists killed in separate crashes

Three motorcyclists were killed in separate crashes in St James and Westmoreland yesterday as the summer months continue to see a surge in road fatalities.

The names of the three men have not been released.

“Excessive speeding” was listed among the possible main causes in all three collisions, according to a police report.

A 29-year-old man was killed after his motorcycle collided with a motor car about 11:05 p.m. along the Llandilo main road in Savanna-la-Mar.

In the second crash, which occurred 10 minutes later in St James, a 37-year-old man was killed after his motorcycle collided with a motor car along Gordon Crescent in Grandville, the police report revealed.

The third crash happened at 11:36 p.m. along the Big Bridge main road in Westmoreland after a motorcycle collided with a motor car.

Fifty-six motorcyclists have died on Jamaica’s roadways since January 1 this year, accounting for 25 per cent of all road deaths.

A total of 35 people have died in motor vehicle crashes since the start of this month, seven more than in the comparative period last year, police statistics show.

Forty-one people died in motor vehicle crashes last month and 35 in June, bringing the total to 111 since the end of May.

Before the 41 road deaths recorded in July, the highest for a calendar month was the 26 deaths recorded in April, according to the police statistics.

Nationally, 222 people have died on Jamaica’s roadways since January 1 this year, 13 per cent, or 32 fewer than in the comparative period last year.
