Road death toll passes 100 amid sharp decline in fatal crashes

The number of people killed on Jamaica’s roadways this year has surpassed 100 amid a significant decline in road fatalities.
An 18-year-old motorcyclist and a 25-year-old pillion were killed in separate crashes in Westmoreland yesterday, pushing the total number of road deaths this year to 103, according to the latest police statistics.
Road deaths are down by 43 or 29 per cent year-to-date, the statistics revealed.
The 17 road deaths recorded in March were the lowest for a calendar month so far this year and a 100 per cent decrease when compared with the corresponding month last year.
The 26 road deaths recorded in April were the highest for a single calendar month this year.
A police report said the teen was killed about 11:30 p.m. along the Petersfield main road in a crash that involved a motorcycle with no registration plate.
“An animal in the carriageway, inclusive of bolt horse,” inattention or diverted attention and excessive speed were listed as the possible causes of the crash.
