The venerable Titchfield High School marked its 240th anniversary with a week-long programme of celebrations, culminating in a family fun day on the school’s grounds on Easter Monday.
Festivities began on March 29 with a meet-and-greet at the Ken Wright Pier, where past students – including many from the overseas diaspora – turned out in large numbers to reconnect, socialise and reminisce. The gathering set a convivial tone for the week ahead.
Participants enjoyed a spread of specially prepared local dishes, including escovitch fish, brown-stewed fish, stewed pork, fried chicken and jerk chicken, while dancing to music drawn from a variety of genres.
The celebrations continued with a large health fair hosted by the Wagglas Foundation at the school. The initiative brought together past students, particularly those based overseas, who assembled a team of doctors and nurses to provide free medical services to residents of the surrounding community.
“It is our annual event and we managed to bring together a medical team from the United States, along with volunteers to provide free medical check-up to the people,” commented Cathlene Lyons, vice-chairman of the Wagglas Foundation.
“It is fitting and it complements the 240th anniversary celebration at Titchfield High School. So we offered blood pressure tests, diabetes, eye testing, dental care, and many more. We are committed to this event and we will be back again next year,” she added.
The week’s marquee event – the anniversary gala – was held at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) and attracted the largest audience. A number of prominent figures attended, including Richie Burgess, Chief Justice Bryan Sykes, Raymond Duncan, Warren Danford, Michael Smith and Carlene Williams, lending the evening an added sense of occasion.
The celebrations ended on Easter Monday with a family fun day for children and parents. Principal Richard Thompson said the well-organised events reunited old friends and associates during the anniversary week.
