A commuter carries a cake in Havana, Cuba.

THE EDITOR, Madam:

As a Catholic Priest, I wish to express my concern regarding the difficult circumstances currently facing the Cuban people, resulting from ongoing economic challenges. Given our close proximity within the Caribbean, it is incumbent upon us to recognize our shared humanity and responsibility to respond with compassion and justice.

Guided by Catholic social teaching and broader Christian values, we are called to uphold human dignity, advocate for the vulnerable, and promote the common good. In alignment with these principles, I respectfully urge the government, civil society, and international partners to prioritise humanitarian assistance for Cuba. This includes ensuring unobstructed access to vital resources such as food, medicine, clean water, and shelter; establishing secure and dignified routes for aid delivery; and coordinating efforts responsibly and transparently with reputable relief organisations.

While acknowledging the complexities of international relations, it is essential that urgent humanitarian needs take precedence over political considerations. The Cuban population must not be left to endure economic hardship unassisted, and regional solidarity should remain intact.

Jamaica, rooted in compassion and justice, has the capacity and obligation to contribute by:

– Supporting lawful and transparent channels to deliver aid efficiently;

– Promoting dialogue and cooperation focused on relief, dignity, and the protection of fundamental rights;

– Collaborating with regional and international relief networks to optimize impact and ensure accountability;

– Encouraging prayerful reflection and constructive advocacy to advance practical solutions for immediate and long-term relief.

Policymakers, faith communities, and civil society should act promptly, reject complacency, and affirm the value of life by safeguarding those who are most vulnerable. This is an opportunity for meaningful and compassionate action that rises above borders and political differences.

Let our response embody the principles of Christian charity, applied thoughtfully and grounded in hope. May our efforts demonstrate integrity, compassion, and unwavering respect for the dignity of every Cuban.
