Blessed are the poor in spirit

When we hear the word ‘poor’, our mind usually thinks about lack of money, possessions, or social status. A poor person is often seen as someone who cannot afford the comforts of life. In contrast, a rich person is someone who owns wealth, property, and many material possessions. But the phrase “poor in spirit” points to something much deeper than what we understand by poverty.

ROOT OF HELL: I AND MINE

Material poverty simply means lacking external resources. But poor in spirit does not refer to weakness or emptiness of the soul. Instead, it refers to freedom from the feeling of ownership.

Human beings often believe my body, my success, my talents, my family, my achievements, my experiences, etc. This sense of “I” and “mine” slowly builds an invisible wall of false identity around us. The more we believe we own things, the more our identity becomes tied to those possessions.

Ego is built upon the constant need to protect and expand the “mine”, which, ultimately, diversifies the “I.” This leads to comparison, pride, jealousy, and fear of loss. The more we cling, the more restless the mind becomes.

WHAT IS POOR IN SPIRIT?

To be poor in spirit means to let go of this illusion of ownership. It means realising that nothing truly belongs to us forever – not our wealth, or position, or relationships, not even our physical body. All these things are temporary roles and gifts that pass through our lives. When a person stops claiming ownership and begins to see self as a trustee, something remarkable happens: the ego begins to dissolve.

When the ego softens, the heart becomes lighter. A person who is poor in spirit begins to resemble the innocence of a child – open, humble, and free from the heavy burden of proving or possessing.

Such a person may still live with wealth, responsibilities, or success, but internally, there is no attachment. Nothing is tightly held as mine. Everything is simply experienced with gratitude and awareness. This bankruptcy brings deep peace.

HEAVEN IS YOUR HOME!

A mind entangled in owning can live in the most comfortable space and still feel restless and dissatisfied. Small disturbances can create frustration and misery. Such a mind can turn heaven into hell.

On the other hand, a mind that is humble and unattached can remain peaceful even in difficult circumstances. When the heart is light, joy arises naturally from within. This is why ‘poor in spirit’ are blessed for heavenly kingdom is theirs’. Their hearts are no longer polluted by pride, ownership, or fear. In that pure heart dwells love, peace, and divinity. Heaven is your true home. Let’s return home.
