Unconstitutional! Court strikes down Bengal mining permit in Dry Harbour Mountains
Jamaica’s Constitutional Court has struck down as "unconstitutional, void, and of no effect" the 2020 environmental permit granted for Bengal Development Limited’s controversial limestone mining project, handing a major victory to St Ann residents who challenged the approval. The ruling blocks the proposed quarrying operation in the ecologically sensitive Dry Harbour Mountains, where residents argued the development threatened their constitutional right to a healthy environment.
The first direct US-Venezuela commercial flight in seven years is heading to Caracas
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The first direct commercial flight between the United States and Venezuela departed a bit early Thursday on its way to the capital of the South American country, seven years after the US Homeland Security Department ordered an indefinite suspension, citing security concerns. The resumption of a non-stop commercial flight between the two countries comes months after the US capture of then President Nicolás Maduro in a stunning nighttime raid on his residence in Caracas in early January.

Caribbean Cement annual output fell to five-year low
The kiln expansion at Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL) failed to lift output past one million tonnes in 2025 as production dipped below 2020 pandemic levels, according to data in its annual report. Going forward, operations could see “uncertainty” with higher input costs due to oil shocks caused by the US-Iran war, the annual report warns. Its kiln – the equivalent of an industrial furnace – was completed and commissioned in April–May 2025, after which Hurricane Melissa struck last October, causing temporary disruptions.

Editorial | CARICOM and Caracas
Delcy Rodríguez’s charm offensive in the Caribbean, and her promotion of a Venezuela-Barbados partnership on renewable energy, highlight the need for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to fashion a coherent framework for its relations with Caracas, as well as to finalise its long-discussed regional energy policy. Jamaica has a stake in these matters, not least because of the unresolved issue of Venezuela’s 49 per cent stake in the Petrojam oil refinery, which the Holness administration re-nationalised six years ago. Caracas rejected Kingston’s prescribed price for its shares.
