Jamaica recorded more than one million visitor arrivals and earned US$956 million in the first quarter of 2026, a major milestone achieved just five months after the disruption caused by Hurricane Melissa. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, who disclosed the figures during a diaspora reception at the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, described the performance as “resilience in action”.

Police advise of security restrictions for Reggae Girlz match
The police have advised of several restrictions for patrons attending the Concacaf W Qualifier between the Reggae Girlz and Antigua and Barbuda at the National Stadium this evening. The police say no weapons, selfie sticks, fireworks, flame-creating devices, large igloos, umbrellas with metal tips, alcoholic beverages or bottles of any kind will be permitted inside the venue. All persons entering the stadium will be subjected to a search. They also say no vending will be tolerated outside the approved zones.
Teen trapped, drowns in breached water facility
The longstanding dangers posed by unauthorised entry into National Water Commission (NWC) facilities were brought into tragic focus on Wednesday when a 16-year-old boy drowned at the Red Road water storage tank in Palmers Cross, Clarendon – a site residents admit has been repeatedly breached for years despite posted warning signs. The deceased boy has been identified as Orville McLeod, a student of Palmers Cross district. Police reports state that about 3:30 p.m., Orville was among a group of boys who breached the protective barrier surrounding the NWC tank to swim.
Cuban exit exposes specialist gaps at CRH
WESTERN BUREAU: The departure of 27 Cuban healthcare workers from Cornwall Regional Hospital has exposed critical gaps in specialist care, forcing the Government to turn to the diaspora, Africa, and India to fill the void. Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, speaking at a press briefing in Montego Bay, St James, on Thursday, said the group – comprising 22 nurses, three doctors, and four radiotherapists – had been filling roles that could not easily be staffed locally.
