Two patients underwent corrective scoliosis surgery at no cost at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) during a two-day surgical programme involving UHWI clinicians and international non-profit organisation Back to Healing. All specialised implants required for the procedures were donated, removing a major cost associated with corrective scoliosis surgery.
Heavenly fire - Witness recounts Pathways leader’s alleged shooting rampage as cops, soldiers arrived at church
The late leader of the Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries had reportedly claimed to be the prophet ‘Elijah’ and tried to summon heavenly fire before shooting at cops during a bloody 2021 service at the church. “Mr [Kevin] Smith started to say he was Elijah and just as Elijah called down fire from Heaven to consume the army. [He said,] ‘If I be a prophet of God and the word from my mouth is true, I call down fire from Heaven to consume the 5-0s’,” a former member of the church testified.

NEW YORK (AP): CNN, MS NOW and Politico yesterday sued President Donald Trump’s administration days after they were barred from White House grounds, calling the selective ban — based on the content of their coverage — illegal and a “blatant violation” of the First Amendment. Trump said in a post that he “cherished” a free press but not “FAKE NEWS”. “White House access is a privilege — not a right,” the administration posted on X.

‘Fire in December’ brings Sam Sharpe to Little Theatre
The winning script from the LASCO Chin Foundation’s 2025 Scriptwriting Competition is moving from page to stage this October. Writer and director David Tulloch’s Fire in December opens at The Little Theatre in Kingston for a seven-day run. From October 5–11, Fire in December will be presented across 21 performances, with three shows daily, bringing to the stage a powerful Jamaican story centred on National Hero Sam Sharpe and the events surrounding the 1831 Christmas Rebellion.

Paramount reaches deal with US states to settle case challenging Warner buyout, AP source says
Skydance-owned Paramount reached a settlement Monday with a group of state attorneys general that had sued to challenge the company’s buyout of Warner Bros Discovery, effectively paving the way for the mega merger to move forward, a person familiar with the matter told the AP. The person was not authorizsed to speak publicly, and did so on condition of anonymity. Details of the settlement with the states were not immediately available, but were expected to be revealed later in the day.

There may indeed be nothing to hide, or that is being hidden, in Jamaica’s third-country national (TCN) agreement with the United States. In which case, there is, or ought to be, no basis for keeping it secret. Neither is it enough merely to say, or imply, as Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith did last week, that the Americans want the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to remain concealed and that Jamaicans should take her word about the efficacy and relative harmlessness of the arrangement.
