ROADBLOCK TO EDUCATION - Maldon High loses hundreds of students amid road crisis
WESTERN BUREAU: Almost a year after Hurricane Melissa hit western Jamaica, a major road collapse in Spring Mount, St James, has resulted in Maldon High School seeing more than 300 students drop off its roll.

The late leader of the Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries had reportedly claimed to be the prophet ‘Elijah’ and tried to summon heavenly fire before shooting at cops during a bloody 2021 service at the church. “Mr [Kevin] Smith started to say he was Elijah and just as Elijah called down fire from Heaven to consume the army. [He said,] ‘If I be a prophet of God and the word from my mouth is true, I call down fire from Heaven to consume the 5-0s’,” a former member of the church testified.

BOGOTA (AP): Colombian authorities declared a public calamity as a wildfire burned through mountains surrounding one of the country’s best-known colonial towns in the northeast, scorching large swaths of vegetation and forcing evacuations. Nearly 20 active fires are burning across the South American country. Dry conditions have increased fire danger in Colombia as it braces for the effects of El Niño, which can help wildfires spread.

Trouble is brewing in St Ann football circles, with Mount Pleasant Academy and the St Ann Football Association at loggerheads over the club’s future home ground following the arrival of Chapelton Maroons at the Drax Hall Sports Complex. ‘Fire in December’ brings Sam Sharpe to Little Theatre
The winning script from the LASCO Chin Foundation’s 2025 Scriptwriting Competition is moving from page to stage this October. Writer and director David Tulloch’s Fire in December opens at The Little Theatre in Kingston for a seven-day run. From October 5–11, Fire in December will be presented across 21 performances, with three shows daily, bringing to the stage a powerful Jamaican story centred on National Hero Sam Sharpe and the events surrounding the 1831 Christmas Rebellion.

Paramount reaches deal with US states to settle case challenging Warner buyout, AP source says
Skydance-owned Paramount reached a settlement Monday with a group of state attorneys general that had sued to challenge the company’s buyout of Warner Bros Discovery, effectively paving the way for the mega merger to move forward, a person familiar with the matter told the AP. The person was not authorizsed to speak publicly, and did so on condition of anonymity. Details of the settlement with the states were not immediately available, but were expected to be revealed later in the day.

There may indeed be nothing to hide, or that is being hidden, in Jamaica’s third-country national (TCN) agreement with the United States. In which case, there is, or ought to be, no basis for keeping it secret. Neither is it enough merely to say, or imply, as Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith did last week, that the Americans want the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to remain concealed and that Jamaicans should take her word about the efficacy and relative harmlessness of the arrangement.
