Residents of Oracabessa, St Mary, are enjoying a cleaner and more hygienic environment, thanks to an improvement in garbage collection by the NEPM National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) in the area.

Councillor for the Division, Ramon Henry, provided details at Tuesday’s Public Health and Sanitation meeting of the St Mary Municipal Corporation.

The significant improvement, Henry noted, can be attributed to the increased frequency with which NEPM has been collecting the garbage, as well as the concerted efforts of community members in advocating for better garbage disposal among each other.

“Persons have been reporting that they are seeing improvement in the collection and we had a problem with how persons normally dispose garbage in the [skips] as well,” Henry said.

He referred to two skips in the Division that were normally in a “deplorable state”.

He pointed out that community members have been forming groups to advise persons on how to dispose of their garbage in a proper manner.

“There are persons in the community giving a watchful eye and advocating to others. They are telling them that they can’t do it when they do it a certain way. They should come out of their car and place the garbage directly in the skip, instead of just flinging it through their window,” Henry said.
