Garvey Maceo High picked up maximum points in their Zone Three round of 16 daCosta Cup match yesterday after defeating Maggotty High 3-2 at the Wembley Centre of Excellence to move to four points and take control of the group.

Coming off a goalless draw in their opening game against Clarendon College, the Lester Hibbert-coached Garvey Maceo jumped into a commanding 3-0 halftime lead with goals from Roshawn Whyte in the 13th and 20th minutes, and Tyreek McKenley in the 35th minute.

However, they had to withstand a strong second-half comeback from their opponents. A 50th-minute strike from Ashanie Bailey and a 60th-minute effort from Darrell Cumbrie cut the deficit to one. Maggotty fought gallantly to pull level but the defending champions held on for the win.

Hibbert was pleased with the result.

“The boys played brilliantly in the first half. However, complacency stepped in during the second half as they became a bit undisciplined, even missing a penalty. Against a much better organised team we would have been in trouble," said Hibbert.

""We are looking forward to our final game on Tuesday against Glenmuir as the aim is to get maximum points and advance to the quarterfinals," the Garvey Maceo coach said.

Losing coach Rimario Scott was a bit disappointed with his team's first-half display.

"We played poorly in the first half and allowed Garvey Maceo to take control of the game. Despite a better second half, the odds were always against us after going down by three goals," said Scott who is hoping to get a positive result in their final game against Clarendon College at St Elizabeth Technical next Tuesday.
