New Little London Police Station in Westmoreland officially opened
The new Little London Police Station in Westmorland was officially opened today.
The upgraded facility replaces the previous station, which was destroyed by fire. The structure was also recently impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
Among other things, it is outfitted with solar power and a rainwater harvesting system, which is part of a thrust by the Government to push climate resilience.
“This police station… will be brought into the service of the people now, not just for their work, but also for the recovery process,” said Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness at the opening.
Minister of State in the Minister of National Security Juliet Cuthbert Flynn commended officers for their dedication during Hurricane Melissa, noting that they continued to work despite extremely challenging conditions.
“Some were serving from stations covered by tarpaulin without electricity… but still provided that critical police service to the public. That is commitment… sacrifice… and service above self,” she said.
Construction of the station began in 2017 under a partnership between the National Housing Trust and the Government of Jamaica, aimed at improving security infrastructure across the island.
For her part, Deputy Commissioner of Police Karina Powell-Hood highlighted the progress being made in crime reduction across Westmoreland, reporting a 59 per cent drop in murders and a 45 per cent decrease in shootings.
