Are you serious, PM?
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Prime ministers must be careful of their public utterances. It seems to me that if Prime Minister (PM) Andrew Holness is truly serious about his view that persons convicted of the illegal possession of a firearm should be sentenced to death, then the following should take place, first and foremost :
1. The PM should immediately resign from being a member of the Queen’s Privy Council.
2. The PM should swiftly lead the charge in constitutionally removing the Queen as Jamaica’s ceremonial head of state.
3. The PM should immediately lead the charge in making the Caribbean Court of Justice Jamaica’s final Court of Appeal.
4. The red tape involved with obtaining a firearm licence should be, where possible, reduced.
Then, and only then, will we be able to take the PM at his word - that left up to him, the death penalty would be applied to persons convicted of the possession of an illegal firearm.
