Lockdowns are working
THE EDITOR, Madam:
We can see that these weekly lockdowns are actually working, in that the total daily COVID-19 infections and positivity rate are dropping.
These lockdowns work, despite the rush for goods on open days. While the businesses are no doubt suffering, what is the other alternative at this point? It is very likely that these lockdowns will have to continue even longer, in order to get to low number of infections.
Jamaica has the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rate in the Caribbean, so we really cannot depend on vaccines to diminish the spread of the virus at this time. Once the hospitals are filled to capacity (which they are), avoiding extended lockdowns is probably impossible.
