Katrina Abrahams’ solo exhibition Celebrating Women opens December 6
After 10 years away from the solo exhibition spotlight, Jamaican artist Katrina Abrahams is set to return with ‘Celebrating Women’.
The exhibition is a tribute to the strength, perseverance, and triumph of women, qualities Abrahams has witnessed in others and lived herself.
In 2018, Abrahams was struck by a vehicle, sustaining a severe brain injury and multiple fractures. She spent a year in recovery, a journey that forced her to relearn how to paint. Though devastating, she describes the experience as transformative, crediting her survival and healing to the grace of God.
This renewed perspective is woven through ‘Celebrating Women’, a collection that highlights women’s ability to rise above their circumstances and remain steadfast for themselves, their families, and their communities. “Today’s woman has been called to wear many hats and still remain sensitively female,” Abrahams said. To honour this reality, she has selected a group of women she admires — figures who exemplify courage, dignity, and perseverance. Yet she emphasises that this celebration extends far beyond these individuals, paying tribute to countless women whose quiet battles and victories often go unseen.
“I portray my emotions and experiences through the different faces of women who cross my path,” she explains. “Every person I see has something that I can identify with — some quality that is admirable, that enables victory, even survival.” In a world filled with hardship and uncertainty, Abrahams believes in focusing on what is “good, wholesome and uplifting”, a mindset she says can foster gratitude and strengthen mental well-being.
With ‘Celebrating Women’, Katrina Abrahams marks a return to the Jamaican art scene and offers a salute to the power, resilience, and enduring spirit of women everywhere. The exhibition will open on December 6, at 16 Hyperion Avenue, Jacks Hill, Kingston, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Part proceeds of sales will be donated to survivors of Hurricane Melissa.
