Jamaica Futsal and Scrimmage Association Limited (JFSA), the organiser of the National Futsal Championship North West Region says theinaugural tournament represents a major push to develop futsal islandwide.
Trelawny Scheemaz were crowned champions on Saturday at Bayside Field Club in Freeport, Montego Bay, when they defeated Lucea United FC 4-1 in the final.
“It is the first time it's happening in Jamaica. However, we want to replicate this across the 14 parishes so each FA runs their own competition, just like the Major, Super, and Tier Two [leagues],” said Rojay Stewart, tournament coordinator.
“We are hoping that we can generate enough support behind it that we can continue having the regional finals and the players and the teams that are going to go into next year’s Premier league,” added Stewart.
Beyond competition, the initiative is expected to create opportunities for player development, community engagement, and national expansion of the sport.
The competition started with eight teams but ended with six due to unforeseen circumstances.
The six teams were divided into two zones, with the top two, Lucea United and Scheemaz, advancing directly to the final.
“The six teams comprise two teams [each] from St James, Hanover, Trelawny. The teams are placed in two zones, and they play each other once, and the winner with the highest number of points goes on to the finals,” said Stewart.
Winning coach Everett Mullings expressed confidence in the team's talent and their determination to do well in the upcoming national competition.
“We're going to try our best in the upcoming tournament in Kingston. It’s a very talented team, and we possess the football well,” said Mullings.
Mullings stated that the team began playing competitively in December 2025.
He acknowledged the need for additional training and more players.
“We need some more players [to create] depth because you can see we only have eight players today going into the finals. We will be more organised,” added Mullings, who praised the organisation of the event.
Scheemaz received the winning trophy, and Dennis Lee was awarded the Most Valuable Player.
Meanwhile, Mayor of Montego Bay Richard Vernon said he welcomed the expansion into a national competition.
“To support the realisation of the northwest competition, I made a personal donation of 100,000 to offset costs. I am sowing a seed for the blossoming of the competition and for the furtherance of youth development across the municipality,” said Vernon.
In 2018, MoBay Futsal Championship began, spawning the development of several teams across the parish.
“Futsal is quickly gaining traction in St James. I believe it is a good way of connecting with youth, community, and at the same time, bridging gaps across them. This helps with keeping them meaningfully engaged, reducing turf tension and violent crimes,” added Vernon.
Trelawny Scheemaz will now look towards the national competition, which will be held on June 6 in Kingston.
